Sounding like Brent was at the wrong place at the wrong time and paid with his life, but with all the media jumping over the story and positioning it to sound like the Russian military purposely murdered a journalist, this may be an attempt to escalate US involvement.
This article (with many source references) helps to paint a bigger picture. It is not clear if Brent was working independently in Ukraine, but the NYT did clarify he was not on assignment for them.
